After much anticipation, Spring has finally arrived! As the chill leaves the us for warmer temperatures, I still cling to my winter days with a delicious and vibrantly hued cocktail - Blood Orange & Bourbon. Since blood oranges are typically in season from winter to early May, I only have a couple of more days to enjoy and I choose to enjoy with you. Put together, these two ingredients meld nicely together for a fantastic cocktail. For those of you who are not interested in bourbon, you can top off the cocktail with champagne or seltzer water.
BLOOD ORANGE & BOURBON COCKTAIL
Makes 1 cocktail
- 3 oz freshly squeezed blood orange juice (strain to remove pulp and seeds)
- 2 oz Makers Mark bourbon (or your favorite bourbon)
- A splash of simple syrup (see note)
- 3-4 drops of Angostura bitters
- 1 large ice cube or ice cubes
- optional garnishes: blood orange slices or sprigs of mint
Place a few ice cubes into a cocktail shaker and add blood orange juice, bourbon, and simple syrup over the ice. (Feel free to muddle about 3-5 mint leaves with the simple syrup prior to adding ice, blood orange juice and bourbon for a next level flavor explosion.) Shake vigorously for 30-60 seconds.
In a glass of your choosing, add either an over-sized ice cube or ice cubes and strain the cocktail into the glass. Shake a few drops of bitters into the cocktail. Garnish with mint and a slice of blood orange. Enjoy!
Note: Simple syrup is a 1:1 ratio of water and sugar. For example, add one cup of water and one cup of water in a small pot and bring to a gentle boil. Stirring occasionally until the liquid becomes clear. Allow to cool and use accordingly.
